Brittany

Brittany

Over 2 700 km of contorted coastline, dozens of islands, hills covered in low heath and a patchwork of fields… In Brittany’s mild coastal climate, you will be surrounded my amazing landscapes !  Agriculture plays an important role in the region, both on the use of its territory and for its economy. The share of regional agricultural and agro-industrial employment, approximately 10%, remains among the highest in France.

Brittany is a leading vegetable area. The vegetable farms produce more than 80 % of the tonnage of French cauliflower, artichokes and shallots.

In 2015 the region produces 59 % of the national tonnage of pork, 42 %of the eggs, 1/3 of poultry meat, 1/4 of the meat of calves and 22 % of the volume of milk !

Brittany is the first French dairy region. Family-sized farms breed an average of 50 cows (predominantly Prim’Holstein). With the end of the E.U. quotas on milk, the sector is adapting quickly.

Breton pig breeders often manage both a farrowing barn and a fattening unit. 14 million pigs are raised in family-owned businesses and larger industrial units. Battery rearing of chickens, laying hens and turkeys is also an important activity in the area, relying on the local industries.

Every year, the SPACE International Livestock Trade Fair welcomes over a thousand exhibitors from the livestock industry in Rennes. Visitors from all around the world gather to enjoy the innovation competitions, the technical-focus conferences, the dedicated research and development area and the animal shows. Join them !

On the Emerald Coast, stretching west from the Mont St Michel, witness some of the highest tides in Europe. Mont Saint Michel needs no introduction. It is a beauty of nature and architecture, and it is no surprise it is the most visited site in France.

Just west of the Mont St Michel is the Pink Granite Coast, so-called because of the colour of its rocks. The walled town of Saint-Malo is built like one of these granite stone, facing out to sea. Nicknames the Corsair City, it has a long connexion with explorers and sailors.

Guérande’s salt marshes represent a great and unique heritage. For more than 1000 years, the paludiers have worked this fragile mosaic of clay and water, and extracted salt from the sea. Take some home, for a taste of Brittany !
