Alps

The famous Alps, with summits as high as 4 800 m, occupy two thirds of the territory. The Rhône, running down the hills from Switzerland, flows down the valley. You can only expect a large diversity of farms with such variations of landscape !
Confronted to high production costs in the mountains and to the competition from more intensive systems, farmers try to give a higher value to their products. The area counts more official designation labels than any other in France. Facilitated by an important number of local consumers and tourists, and by the wide diversity of products available, short supply food chains developed intensively. The region is also a leader in the area of organic agriculture.

Crop
Down in the valley, patches of vineyards, from the Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône designations can be found next to large orchards. Cherries, peaches, apricots, kiwifruits, chestnuts or walnuts : the mild climate enables farmers to grow a large variety of fruits. Along the Drôme river, fields of lavender represent over 30% of the national harvest.

Livestock

Cheese
